Early Years experiences should build on what the children already know and can do:

Within the Early Years we can cover up to 12 topics over a one two year cycle:

Ourselves
Traditional Tales
Toys
Colour
Growth
Our Amazing World
Change
People who help us
Journeys
Animals
Bears

Children will often share their own interests and we will often explore for short periods of time other topics for example we have had fun with nursery rhymes and have turned our classroom into Noah's Ark

During the Ourselves topic we have fun with skeletons.

The Traditional Tales activities have us dressing up as Little Red Riding Hood and making our own stories.

Havbe a look at our work and dispalys from other topics.

We believe at Westwood that the Early Years is important because it is in the foundation years that children develop learning attitudes, skills, social integration and personal organisation. We strongly support play being a central tool for learning; it is a key way in which young children learn with enjoyment and challenge. Structured play where the learning outcome has been clearly identified through careful planning and support is very important in the Early Years classroom.

Early years experience should build on what children already know and can do

This year we painted some beautiful green aliens and this year we are getting excited about tasting Chinese food during Chinese New Year.

Mrs Mills' favourite time is when we have a look at animals, we visit Knowsley Safari Park and Mrs Birchall's favourite time is Circle Time when we talk about our feelings, experiences and topics from our week.

Watch out for our art and language work when we explore traditional tales. It's exciting in reception, we are always busy and we welcome parents and grandparents to come and join in and enjoy our fun.

At Westwood Primary School we believe it is important to provide an Early Years education that aims to meet the individual needs of every child in our care. Children are made to feel safe and secure and are valued as individuals. Independence is fostered as are positive attitudes to learning and each child is encouraged to reach their full potential regardless of their ethnic and socio-economic background, race, gender, creed or ability.
