THE YEAR SIX CURRICULUM
In Year 6 our pupils study 'The Life and Times of William Shakespeare' as their main history topic. This topic naturally leads itself to learning across the curriculum. Children undertake an investigation about Shakespeare's life, get involved in debates about the reliability of different historical sources, find out about religious conflict and persecution, make mittens or hats in the Tudor style and go to see a play performed by the wonderful 'Shakespeare for Kids' theatre company. In recent years we have seen Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer's Night Dream. We have even recently producedour own performance of Macbeth. Take a look at some of the children's lovely topic work.
OVER THE YEAR
Over the year, our Year 6 pupils study a variety of scientific topics including The Human Body, Plants and Life Cycles, Changing Materials, and Electrical Circuits. Our children acquire skills, knowledge and understanding through lots of stimulating, practical activities, regularly planning and carrying out their own investigations. Amongst the most favoured science topics are Plants. Our children grow, observe, and even dissect their own plants. During The Human Body topic, Year 6 learn about diseases spread by micro-organisms and get the chance to grow their own moulds. Look at some of the fabulous newspaper reports that Year 6 have written about Edward Jenner's lifesaving discoveries.
THE SUMMER TERM
During the Summer Term, Year 6 undertake a big Geography topic about The Lake District. They learn about the Geological history of The Lakes and consider The Lake District from the points of view of the many people who live, work, and visit The Lakes, especially studying the impact of tourism. The children produce multimedia Virtual Tours based on their work, using links with literacy, art, music, and ICT. Take a look at some of their stunning work.
YMCA LAKESIDE
Finally, we finish off Year 6 with a residential trip. For several years now we have visited the YMCA Lakeside Centre on Lake Windermere. The children take part in many challenging and thrilling activities. As well as developing confidence, independence, and team working skills, the trip is huge fun !
